UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 26 December 2007



UNPol Daily Security Briefing 26 December 2007 - This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Dili and across the country over the past 24 hours remains relatively calm.

Early yesterday morning at 3am, Laga PNTL responded to reports of fighting by villagers in Mulia village, sub-district Laga, Baucau District. Six persons were arrested. Minor injuries were sustained.

Yesterday morning at 8.20am, a man was arrested at Comoro Market on charges of possessing a machete and a sling shot.

Later that afternoon at 6.30pm, a UN vehicle was stoned at Metinaro IDP camp. The GNR FPU were able to disperse the crowd and no injuries were sustained.

At 10.20pm on Monday night, UNPOL and the PNTL Task Force responded to reports of a fight between two martial arts groups in Gariwai village, Baucau. A man, injured by an arrow dart in his left leg, was transported to the hospital. The case is under investigation.

UNMIT Daily Security Briefing 21 December 2007 - This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Dili and across the country over the past 24 hours remains relatively calm.

At 12.30am this morning, UNPOL responded to a report of fighting between two groups at Surik Mas roundabout in Dili. A warning shot fired by a PNTL officer dispersed the groups.

Yesterday morning at 9am, fighting erupted between three martial art’s groups at Bikala’s Market in Hatu Udo, Ainaro District. Approximately 25 people were involved in the stone throwing. Minor injuries were sustained by three persons.

Yesterday afternoon at 3.30pm, a civilian vehicle accompanying the Presidential Convoy to Viqueque was stoned by unidentified persons. No damages or casualties were reported.

UNMIT Daily Security Briefing 19 December 2007 - This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste is generally calm.

Fighting erupted yesterday morning between two martial arts groups at Buikaren market, Viqueque. Approximately 100 members were involved and had used weapons consisting of machetes, knives and sling shots. One 20 year old gang member, badly injured, passed away at Viqueque's Hospital at approximately 14:15 hours. One suspect has been placed under arrest.

On Monday afternoon, a 12 year old boy, was seriously injured by a mailman wielding a machete, in Wailili - Waturou de Baixo, Baucau's District. The victim was admitted to Baucau Hospital and the suspect has been arrested. The investigation into the incident is continuing.

UNPol Daily Security Briefing 18 December 2007 - This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste is generally calm.

Late yesterday afternoon, UNPOL responded to an incident of assault in front of the Tasi Tolu bus station. The victim was reported to have stepped in to mediate a case of assault involving his own son when a group of approximately five males attacked him from behind. They also threatened to burn his house and vehicle. Four of the suspects have been arrested and detained and taken to Dili’s Watch House.

On Monday at 11pm, an UNPOL patrol was stoned at Tirilolo village, damaging the rear window. No injuries were sustained and incident is to be followed up by the investigation's unit.

On Sunday at 4pm, an UNPOL patrol quickly responded to a report of fighting between two martial arts groups in Aidabaleten Village. Injuries were sustained by some members who were taken to the hospital and released with minor injuries.

On Sunday, UNPOL assisted PNTL investigators in a rape complaint committed on a young girl by a member of her family. The victim and the rapist were found by the suspect's brother who informed the police. The suspect was arrested after admitting that this incident was not the first.

UNPol Daily Security Briefing 13 December 2007 - This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country. The security situation in Timor-Leste is generally calm.

Today in Dili, police attended four incidents, including an incident where three youths threw rocks at a shop after the owner refused to give them money. The youths fled upon the arrival of the police. 

On Wednesday afternoon in Dili, one person was injured after a fight in the Comoro area. Police used tear gas and warning shots to disperse the crowds, and the situation returned to normal at around 2000hrs.

On Wednesday in Viqueque, fighting broke out in the village of Vesuro after a disagreement over gambling. Police arrested 14 people.

The UN Secretary-General and the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will both be arriving in Timor-Leste tomorrow, and there will be a corresponding increased security presence in the capital. Please be alert for fast-moving convoys and motorcades whilst using the roads.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 04 December 2007



UNPol Daily Security Briefing 4 Dec 2007 -  This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country. The security situation in Timor-Leste is generally calm.

Today in Dili, police attended 11 incidents, including one incident of domestic abuse in Beto Timor, where the father of an 18-year-old woman struck his daughter on the head with a machete. The woman has been taken to Dili hospital, but her injuries are not thought to be serious.

Yesterday afternoon in Dili, police received reports of a fight outside Timor Lodge involving approximately 200 people. They managed to bring the situation under control in less than an hour with the assistance of UNPol's Formed Police Units (FPUs), the Falintil Defence Forces of Timor-Leste (F-FDTL), and the International Security Forces (ISF). Reports indicate that three people were injured in the fight, although the extent of their injuries is not known. No firearms were discharged.

Police are still searching for a two-year-old girl from Formosa, Dili, who has been missing since yesterday. Her name is Jotoria Lay Desa. If you have any information as to her whereabouts, please call police on either 112, 723 0635, or 723 0365.
